Effective Practices
Consider sharing effective strategies in your single-gender classroom or school. These are techniques that teachers have found are invaluable in helping boys and/or girls learn more effectively.
Many times, we find strategies that enhance learning or help with classroom management. Rather than keeping these a secret, take the time to develop a lesson summary that other teachers will find invaluable.
The essence in this submission is not only the description of the lesson but also your reflection on how the strategy enhanced students’ learning. Even if a teacher does not have a single-gender classroom, any teacher can use your insights as part of the differentiation of instruction or classroom management.
Strategy- Based Article
An effective way to write this type of article is to use a lesson plan format so that your strategies are captured in a systematic way:
oTitle of your strategies (consider a catchy title)
oOverview of your strategies: (About four sentences that capture the intent of your strategies)
oRationale: Provide about four sentences about why these strategies are essential in terms of learning content, skills, or affective outcomes in a single gender classroom
oSpecification and Details of each strategy: In this section, name each strategy and include a detailed description of the strategy. Try to be as specific as possible so that the strategy is clearly explained. If you have examples of how to use this in the classroom, include this in the description. Also, provide any supporting material (e.g., a rubric) in this section.
Once you have explained each of your strategies, provide a conclusion. It may be as simple as students’ comments about their enthusiasm for using these strategies. This conclusion is your reflection of how the strategies enhance student learning.
